English: Small (less then an inch) hard plastic fragments floating in rivers. Plastic objects, for instance bottles, that end up by the wayside are crushed by traffic or lawn mowing into tiny fragments. The fragments are carried by run-off water to waterways, rivers, and in the end, the sea. Such fragments are mistaken for food by animals and ingested, causing harm and often death. All plastic scraps have been filtered out of the water of the Dutch river Maas (Meuse) near Eijsden (Limburg) in the spring of 2013. The plastic was gathered by Gijsbert Tweehuijsen in the course of his research on River Litter, in the research project Mosa Pura.
Nederlands: Kleine harde fragmenten (scrap, kleine rigids). Zwerfafval dat op straat is terechtgekomen wordt door het verkeer of door het maaien van de bermen verkleind tot kleine stukjes van 1 – 3 cm groot. Deze stukjes komen na een regenbui in het oppervlaktewater terecht en uiteindelijk in de rivieren. Ook deze stukjes drijven aan het oppervlak en worden door vogels en vissen gemakkelijk verward met het voer dat ze normaal eten. |
